“Hollywood is a business as cruel as Wall Street and as brutal as fishing on the Bering Sea.”
In one biting monologue, a character tears off the glimmering silver lining around the storm cloud of the old Hollywood studio system, the so-called “tinsel of Tinseltown” and reveals the true heartache behind the glamour. It’s a metaphor familiar to Master Mystery Productions, but we have never gone as deep as we have with our twentieth show, an interactive mystery drama set in the intoxicating world of 1960’s Hollywood.
WHAT HAPPENS AT SUNDOWN
“Daylight is rumored to be the most reassuring. It brings light, warmth, and life to the world. But as sure as anything could be in this universe, Earth will rotate, causing daylight to shrink and lingering shadows to grow and stretch to the distant horizon. When the sun sinks into slumber, that last fiery burst of light is our final glimpse of serenity before night and the horrors that wait within feed upon our tensions, our insecurities, and our fears. And sometimes…the hungry horrors rise from within our very souls. Take this scenario: Two actresses in the twilight of their careers will learn what happens at sundown when the golden light of glamour fades and the deepening darkness begins to ooze out on this very unique episode of Sundown…”
The opening narration leaves a chill running down your spine as you prepare to travel through time and space to the 1960’s and a television program telling tales of dread and terror called Sundown. But this is a unique episode. The actors and production team have traveled to the Mojave Desert to film on location a story about two sisters, both actresses of a bygone era, whose antagonism escalates beyond control in their isolated surroundings. But when a cameraman is murdered on set, fantasy becomes reality in all-too frightening ways as evidence points to the two lead actresses, former studio darlings themselves. And the story they were going to tell seems to seep into their souls when the minds of the characters start to worm their way into their own. Inspired by 1960’s classics What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and The Twilight Zone, this original tale of twists, turns, secrets, scandals, murder, and malice will push sanity to the brink and challenge audiences to discover a truth stranger than fiction. What happens at sundown? Only the brave know for sure.
What Happens at Sundown will become our record and lucky seventh collaboration with Ridge Writers (Goodbye Hollywood, Hello Out There, Wildflowers for the Funeral, Pauper’s Grave, Ode to Agatha, The Silent City) and our fourth production at their annual Weird Weekend celebrations. This is our third sojourn into the universe of Hollywood and movie stars since our 2015 smash hit Goodbye Hollywood series. This time, we are taking our audiences twenty years later than the events of Goodbye Hollywood–to the year 1963–to an era of radical change in Tinseltown. Glamour still reigned supreme, but for the old guard of the 30’s and 40’s, things were very different and difficult.
Taking inspiration from classics such as The Twilight Zone and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, the show is a drama about family, legacies, mortality, and secrets while also being an homage to the Hollywood history of the Mojave Desert with references to Planet of the Apes and Westworld filming that has happened in the area in recent years. Full of Easter Eggs for longtime MMP fans and some fabulous performances from our mega-talented cast, What Happens at Sundown makes a fitting tribute to the show that gave us our name and as our landmark twentieth show. Glitz, glamour, snark, secrets…what more could you want in a Master Mystery Production?
