AFTER OZ

Auditions

Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15, 2026

4 to 6 p.m. at Red Rock Books (206 W. Ridgecrest Blvd.)

Ridgecrest, CA

After Oz whisks us to a brand new venue: the Kern County Library, Ridgecrest Branch. As a fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, the show will be a magical scavenger hunt and stage play through the shelves to find clues (and shoes) to the truth of what happened to Oz’s most powerful fashion statement. This show will be a funny and fantastical production with puppets galore and opportunities for our young (and young-at-heart) performers to do their own playwriting. It’ll be a fun chance to put our own spin on these beloved characters to honor Baum’s 126-year-old story with fresh eyes.

Actors need to be age 9 and older to audition. Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature on a permission slip AND a parent/guardian MUST attend any and all rehearsals their child attends.

The show performs November 6, 7, 13, and 14, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ridgecrest Branch Library (101 E. Las Flores Ave.).

During auditions, everyone will fill out an audition form which will ask for basics such as name, email, experience, availability, etc. These are just basics to give us an understanding on who the performer is as well as contact information. Then we pair up performers for cold readings of selected scenes from the original script by Daniel Stallings. Rehearsal schedule will be finalized after auditions based on actor availability. After auditions, casting emails will be sent out to everyone who auditioned for the show. The show will be directed by veteran MMP director, Daniel Stallings.

If you are unable to attend the posted audition dates, but are still interested in trying out, message us on Facebook or email us at mastermysteryproductions@hotmail.com to schedule an outside audition.

SYNOPSIS

Something strange is happening over the rainbow. Years ago, young Dorothy Gale from Kansas thought she had a dream. A dream of a magical land filled with munchkins, living scarecrows, winged monkeys, and roads of yellow bricks. But as she’s grown older, she’s dismissed the odd memories as lingering strain from the cyclone she survived. Until the cyclone returns. Dorothy is whisked from the Kansas prairie back to the Land of Oz…to answer for the theft of the magical silver shoes. At the Emerald City, Dorothy encounters friends and villains old as they all try to scramble to find these powerful treasures. Because whoever controls the shoes controls unbelievable power. Where could they be? Will you be able to help Dorothy keep them out of the wrong hands and get home again? Ride the cyclone with us, click your heels together, and help save Dorothy in a brand-new, family-friendly mystery adventure. You may know the original story, but do you know what happened after Oz? There’s no telling where the yellow brick road will lead you this time…

PRINICPAL CAST OF CHARACTERS

DOROTHY GALE — A girl from Kansas who, several years ago, traveled to the Land of Oz in a cyclone. A hardworking, honest, and practical girl, she dismissed the strange adventures of her youth as a kind of fever dream from the cyclone.

GLINDA, THE GOOD WITCH OF THE SOUTH — Ruler over Quadling Country in the South of Oz. She was the one to send Dorothy home by telling her the secret of the silver shoes. Maternal and kind, she is beloved by all of Oz. Nevertheless, to be a good ruler, she must also make tough decisions and have a stern side to keep her unbiased.

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST — Former ruler over the Winkies. More powerful and more wicked than her Eastern counterpart, West worked the Winkies to the very bone and ruled them with an iron fist.

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE EAST — Former ruler over the Munchkins. A tyrannical ruler, she made the Munchkins miserable. She was the former possessor of the silver shoes and their great power. She was killed when Dorothy’s farmhouse fell on her from the cyclone. Her shoes were taken by the young Dorothy. She is a puppet character, performed as a pair of legs.

THE SCARECROW — Ruler of the Emerald City ever since the departure of the Wizard. The wisest in Oz due to the gift of “brains” he received from the Wizard, allowing him to unleash the potential of his intelligence.

THE TIN WOODSMAN — Ruler of Winkie Country in the West of Oz ever since the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. The most empathetic in Oz because of the “heart” he received from the Wizard, letting him connect to other’s emotions and comfort them.

THE COWARDLY LION — King of the Beats in the Forest after defeating the giant spider of the South. Bravest in Oz since he drank the “potion of courage” given to him by the Wizard, the Lion faces any challenge head-on and without hesitation. While no doubt courageous, he lacks a little in modesty and doesn’t want to talk about his time before he “became brave.”

OSCAR DIGGS (THE WIZARD OF OZ) — The deposed ruler of Oz, Oscar is a simple con man and circus balloonist who had bamboozled the citizens of Oz when his hot air balloon landed there. The arrival of Dorothy hastened his departure from the magical land before he was exposed as a fraud. A magical wind whisks the humbug back to Oz in dramatic fashion.

TOTO — Dorothy’s beloved pet dog who journeyed with her to Oz all those years ago. A puppet character.
