Yo Ho!

Yo Ho! Yo Ho! Is the pirate’s life for you? We’re signing you up for the voyage into our twenty-first Master Mystery Production, a swashbuckling sea voyage into the world of pirates, talking parrots, and legendary, buried treasure. For the final show of the 2018 season, we’re off to the coast of South Carolina for an adventure worth its weight in lost Aztec gold. But, be warned, you may have to be brave to contend with…

What starts as a journey into a child’s boundless imagination soon transforms into a swashbuckling sea voyage of mystery, mutiny, and buried treasure.  Precocious and creative Suzie gathers her friends together for a game of pirates that whisks all of us to the shores of Charleston, South Carolina in the 1700’s.  Suzie tells a tale of her ancestor, the fearsome female pirate captain Cutlass Kate, the saber-swishing scourge of the Colonies and the Caribbean.  But it’s not all sword fights and talking parrots in this yarn.  When an act of mercy leads to an accusation of cowardice from an unknown source, a mutiny threatens Kate’s control of her ship.  Just as she was about to undertake the greatest coup of her seafaring career: the hunt for The Loot of a Thousand Ports.  As rivals on sea, on land, and on her own ship breathe down her neck, Kate must discover the instigator of the mutiny, secure her captaincy, and find this legendary treasure…or else it’s a one-way trip to Davy Jones’ locker.

Mutiny on the Sea Witch, a pirate’s treasure mystery, will be our first collaboration with Ridgecrest Community Theatre Troupe. They have produced plays such as Escanaba in da Moonlight, Patient A, Othello, and Evil Dead: The Musical. It’s our second collaboration with an outside theatre troupe after working with the Community Light Opera and Theatre Association (CLOTA) on Goodbye Hollywood: At the Rainbow’s End in 2015. For this collaboration, we wanted to go in a new direction for us, so our compass pointed us to the high seas for a pirate adventure.

For the first time in MMP history, we’re employing kids in our show to create a much more family friendly production. Mutiny on the Sea Witch is not a murder mystery. It’s more like a pirate-themed game with a defector mechanic; You have to locate the instigator of the mutiny. The show even opens with a charming scene starring three girls ages 10 and under, our first featuring such young talent. Mutiny on the Sea Witch also boasts the largest cast in MMP history and is perhaps our most technically demanding show to date. With a ship to build, parrots to train, and sword-fighting to learn, this has become an ambitious production.
