Casting Call for Ex Luna and Visions of Sugarplums

To close out our 10th anniversary season, we’re going to revive two productions in the digital space. On our MMP YouTube page, where we will also unveil new episodes of Regions Beyond this year, we’ll be sharing two new mystery adventures inspired by past productions. We’ll be launching a mission to the moon and back. Then we’ll time-travel to London in the 1930’s. But we need actors to help us bring these mysteries to life. We created these shows to allow actors from around the world to take part, and we accept all levels of experience–even newbies–to join in the fun. Read on to learn how you can audition for the shows!

VISIONS OF SUGARPLUMS: A HOLIDAY ADVENTURE OF BASIL BREMERTON

The Adventures of Basil Bremerton, starring the eccentric English detective known for unraveling the most impossible crimes, commanded the radio waves for years as the world’s favorite mystery radio program between the World Wars. For a delectable holiday treat, radio fans were whisked to a frosty December night in London, 1934 for a premiere performance of the Chamberlain Ballet’s production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. But opening night sours when the Sugar Plum Fairy falls ill onstage and dies. Her death leaves a bad taste in Basil’s mouth when we learn the prima ballerina sought the detective’s help the night before she died. Some phantom of the ballet had been tormenting her: leaving nasty messages, slashing her costume to ribbons, hiding dead mice in her dressing room. Yet the evidence always vanished before she could summon witnesses. The company just thought their prima ballerina was making up stories for attention. But Basil is not one to sugarcoat the situation so easily, and before anyone can have a happy holidays, he makes it his mission to ferret out the sour note hiding in the Land of Sweets. Pull up an armchair to the fireside, listen to this holiday radio special, and see if you can match wits with Basil Bremerton to solve this confectionary crime.

Visions of Sugarplums reunites Calvin Johnson and Davis Kunz as the dream team of Basil and Anders from 2021’s legendary production of Mum’s the Word–a Sherlock Holmes-inspired radio show mystery. Basil’s penchant for loud clothes and off-the-beaten-path clues made him a household name in the 1930’s and 40’s as radios everywhere tuned into his adventures once a week. We thought it would be fun to revive The Adventures of Basil Bremerton for a holiday mystery to close the 2025 season, four years after his amazing debut. Inspired by the Nutcracker Ballet, the story is a classic homage to the Golden Age of Detective Fiction exemplified by authors like Dame Agatha Christie.

EX LUNA

Space. The final frontier. The place where no one can hear you scream. A team of astronauts are on a mission to recover the lost remains of the Eagle, the lunar module that carried the first men to the Moon. But the recent lunar landing has gone horribly awry when the astronaut making a scheduled moon walk dies after his oxygen supply malfunctions. Equipment that shows clear signs of tampering. Before the crew can identify the one responsible, their capsule, on the return to Earth, suffers a devastating oxygen leak and power drainage, turning their return into a race for survival. With a murdered crewmate and a killer in the capsule, it’s up to teams from Mission Control and the Space Station to assemble the evidence, solve the murder, and navigate the marooned astronauts back home in record time. It’s an epic space-age adventure that will leave you breathless!

Reviving a trunk show we performed for a private group in 2016, Ex Luna will blend audio “transmissions, news reports, interviews, and more” with cinematography to create a thriller where a lunar mission goes horribly awry when one crew member is murdered and the others are trapped on a limping spacecraft with a killer onboard. Taking additional inspiration from films such as Searching, Ex Luna will chart a bold new course for Master Mystery Productions in the creation of unique digital entertainment.

We need voice actors for a variety of different roles. To audition for this production, submit an mp3 recording of yourself saying the following line in three distinct takes:

“Houston, we’ve had a problem. Fredericks isn’t responding to his radio. Please advise. Houston, are you there? Houston?”
